“In the third article of the TimeTec Smart Parking series (3 of 12) on Malaysiakini, we've discussed the Past, Present & Future of parking system, where we foresee the possible demise of parking system in the next twenty to thirty years when the roads were mostly taken over by autonomous cars and e-hailing services.” Teh Hon Seng, TimeTec Group CEO, explains the future of the parking industry.
“Even when the prediction is correct, the incessant technology advancement will still keep on improving, renewing and refining the parking system before that.”
“Undoubtedly, the growth of e-hailing companies such as Uber, Lyft, Didi, Grab, etc., will largely impact the parking industry because users will not require any parking space at the intended destination, besides the options of other public transport systems. But statistics still show that in America alone, there are 500 million parking spaces for 326 million citizens spread across 3.5 million square miles of parking infrastructure. More parking spaces than the population are not because some car owners own more than one car, but mainly because cars require more parking spaces when transporting people from one place to another.”
An estimated 30 percent of traffic congestion each year is contributed by drivers searching for one of these parking spots. According to Boston Consulting Group (BCG) research, people in Kuala Lumpur spend 25 minutes every day searching for parking. Another problem is, for a city where people and vehicles congregated, the land is expensive. It seems like the carpark is still that necessary evil that would be stretched for another one to two decades.
Teh Hon Seng said, “Parking technology is transforming the ticket and cash system to ticketless, cashless and touchless system. The future development inevitably will focus on reducing the time to look for parking spots and efficiently managing the parking sites to optimize utilization. In short, towards an automated smart parking direction. As one of the pioneers in developing the smart parking system, TimeTec will continue the efforts towards the same direction.”
Imagine a future that combines an automated valet parking system where you can step out of your car in front of a shopping mall with a single App, communicate the car with the parking site and the digital building system to allow your car to quickly find a parking space, via the easiest route and park on its own. Research in 2018 by University of Toronto researchers found that automated technology could increase the capacity of parking sites by 62 percent. Mercedes-Benz and Bosch even have a trial smart parking program in the works in Stuttgart, Germany. Here is the full demo for the automated valet parking video:
The digital transformation for parking solutions is an ongoing process to establish more connectivity, better efficiency and smarter sustainability. For parking owners, it’s time to think beyond the parking system.

There is a famous valet parking joke based on a true story in the 60s, and it goes like this, "One night Frank Sinatra, the singer, walked out of The Peninsula Hotel and asked a valet parking attendant, 'What was the biggest tip you ever got?' When he said, '$100, Mr Sinatra,' the singer handed him $200 and then asked, 'Who gave you the $100 tip?' The attendant replied, 'It was you, Mr Sinatra.'"
Amazingly, some valet attendants do not only know their clients in person, but they are also well-trained and knowledgeable about nearly every make and model of vehicles, including the alarm systems and keyless ignitions, if not more.
"For parking business owner, valet parking is offered as an extra parking service or a separate entity to customers due to the skills set needed in valet attendants. Still, valet parking is treated as a non-core parking business compared to normal casual and season parking, and its parking module is never the main core module in a parking management system. Even though most parking sites are not offering valet services, for some hotels, nightclubs, hospitals, and shopping malls, valet parking is a compulsory service because valet parking adds a touch of luxury and convenience to car owners. What kind of a 5-star hotel does not provide valet parking service?" asked Teh Hon Seng, TimeTec Group CEO.
"In general, valet parking provides convenience and class. Patrons don't have to drive around looking for parking spots. Those who are in a hurry can leave their vehicles safely in the hands of the valet attendants; plus, it is handy for disabled drivers, and those who own luxury cars would want to arrive in style everywhere they go."
"In short, valet is a service created by inequalities of supply and demand. Valet offers an extra service for vehicle owners to park their cars safely, conveniently and instantly, and sometimes with style," said Teh.
Teh also stressed that valet parking is one of the TimeTec Smart Parking System modules to help valet parking owner eliminate the cash handling risk and be in line with the cashless trend. The operators that cover complete parking services can consolidate the parking revenues from casual, season, enforcement, and valet, all under one cloud platform.
TimeTec Valet Parking System comes together with two handheld TimeTec Valet POS terminals, with a built-in receipt printer that is PCI DSS compliance and accepting credit and debit card and e-Wallet cashless payment methods. In addition, bringing more convenience to customers, the receipt printer of TimeTec Valet Parking System also prints a QR code as an option for customers to scan and pay for the valet before picking up their car. The illustration below shows the process flow:
TimeTec Valet improves the daily operation efficiency of the business owner and provides payment convenience to the customers.

When the parking system started to move from cash to cashless, what are the significant differences besides the absence of physical currency? To be precise, the cash payment form is loosely attached to the parking system; the relationship is just in its tallying process. The complication of cash handling happens outside the parking system. After manually tallying the cash with the system, the off-system cash handling includes the risk of temporarily keeping the cash and transporting it to the bank by trusted personnel. Overall, it is a tedious daily routine.
In contrast, in a cashless system, the complication happens inside the system, where there is almost no “handling” job required for the cashless money after the system collects the fees. Instead, there are settlements between the bank/payment gateway provider and the parking owner/operator behind the scene, with the terms and conditions signed before adopting the cashless system.
TimeTec Group CEO Teh Hon Seng elaborated further on the complexity of cashless in parking systems, “Indeed, more security concerns when moving cash to a cashless system. The pivotal issues like protecting the electronic transaction data such as credit cards and mobile data between participating parties and avoiding the violation of personal data have to be addressed. The good thing is that all the related matters are taken care of in the highly regulated online payment system. For example, the use of credit cards in parking as cashless payment, it required The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard or PCI DSS compliance for its parking terminals.”
Teh Hon Seng explained the differences between cashless parking system and cashless merchant system, “It is far more complicated for a parking system to accommodate cashless payment than the normal merchant system. For example, the e-Wallet providers can go all out to acquire merchants. However, they can’t simply knock on the parking operators’ door and sign them up as merchants because the e-wallet must be seamlessly integrated with the parking access system. Besides, the parking transaction is not as simple as picking up merchandise and paying it according to the price tag when checking out. The date and time of a car entering a parking site have to be recorded, and the fee calculation is based on the duration and parking rate set by the parking owner when checking out. Furthermore, when the customers check in, the system has to verify the validity of the payment card and whether it has sufficient funds to pay when he/she checks out. That explains why the parking operator is charged a slightly higher MDR (Merchant Discount Rate) than normal merchants.”
The parking access cum cashless payment system flow is illustrated in the following diagram:
Touch ‘n Go card is one of its kind for parking payment systems. The payment process flow is almost similar to the credit/debit card, and it is more widely used than credit/debit card in Malaysia’s parking industry.
The main advantage of the above cashless payment system embedded into the parking access system is that there is no payment process between entry and exit.
When the License Plate Recognition or LPR is used as a parking access method, the cashless payment system is less attached. The common practice now is that the back-end parking system will link to an online payment portal consolidated with multiple payment methods. The customer can choose which payment method he/she prefers before exiting the parking site.
Teh Hon Seng said, “As one of the pioneers that provide cashless parking solutions, TimeTec Smart Parking System caters to all the above. Besides providing the unattended parking kiosk that combines Touch ‘n Go solution, credit/debit reader and QR code reader for e-Wallet into one kiosk, we are also an expert in LPR parking solution, and its payment system.”

Having offices in India, Malaysia, Singapore, and Myanmar and Network partners worldwide, SHAL Group provides integrated logistic solutions for customers across the globe.
Managing employees all over, SHAL grappled with a few blind spots that could be costly to the operation. For example, while the company installed biometrics devices at the headquarters, no such devices were available in their hubs and warehouses. Therefore, when the staff work at the sites, the management cannot track the staff attendance, creating a loophole in the workforce system. They also have to endure tedious overtime (OT) applications and approvals that are inefficient and tiresome for the party involved. In addition, the admins need to manually record all the punch card data from all warehouses every month, risking errors and additional costs to the company.
GPS clocking in TimeTec TA eases the attendance data capturing for the sales staff who work out of the office. The GPS clocking in TimeTec TA comes with not only the accurate attendance time, but it also captures the GPS locations in the attendance data, providing the office with the data it needs for better workforce management. In addition, through the concept of BYOD, TimeTec TA App presents total convenience to employees and provides the data to the management in real-time for easy supervision and employee management.
Using TimeTec TA, the cloud-based attendance system, the office can easily sync the attendance data from different warehouses and hubs into a single account for a general overview of the workforce situation. TimeTec TA's linkability also provides better and manageable overtime (OT) applications and approvals, which can be done quickly using the TimeTec TA app on a smartphone, and in turn, provides employees and HR the better tool to manage daily operations.
SHAL understands the need to improve workforce management for better operation, and they choose TimeTec to accomplish that. If your company is having similar problems and looking for a solution, contact our sales at info@timeteccloud.com, for a FREE consultation today!
Petroclamp Sdn Bhd is a company formed in 2008 based on the R&D to venture into the oil and gas industry and specializing in completion technology services and directional drilling services. With over 13 years of experience, its primary business is now divided into in-house design, rapid prototyping, and oil and gas activities.
The pandemic has posed a serious issue in their workforce management, and biometrics alone could not solve it for them. The biometrics system cannot centralize the data from the biometrics devices installed at their branches in Kemaman, Labuan and Hulu Selangor, and with the Work-from-Home in full effect during the lockdown, the management was left with no system to manage its scattered workforce. The company tried to manipulate Google Form for the WFH employees, but in the end, they turned to FingerTec TA700W and TimeTec TA for a more effective, systematic and insightful attendance system as they advanced.
TimeTec TA is a cloud-based attendance system designed specifically for time attendance data and monitoring, and FingerTec TA700W is a fingerprint device with PUSH technology that can send the data straight to the server, and therefore, it is the perfect choice for Petroclamp Sdn Bhd.
With TimeTec TA, HR and managers can combine all their branch attendance systems into one account for effective management and supervision; their staff who WFH can report their attendance through the mobile app, and the on-site staff can report their duty effectively from each location. Not only that, but TimeTec TA also gives them more than what they bargain for in terms of data, records and reports. TimeTec TA provides detailed, accurate and insightful data that they can use for decision-making and operation improvement.
Petroclamp Sdn Bhd's management can now ensure that all their workforce is optimized with TimeTec TA during the pandemic and beyond.

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced companies to review their safety measures to match the health standards requirements that ensure the protection of everybody. While rapid vaccination drives are in full force everywhere, it still leaves no room for companies to down their guards. One of the ways for companies to amp up safety is to reduce the chance of cross contaminations between employees, which means that they have to revisit all the access devices necessary to ensure a better shield from the get-go.
Two companies from Jordan, Freudenberg Vileda Jordan Ltd and Siniora Food Industries, the clients of FingerTec sole distributor in the country, Euro Jordan, take the initiative to secure their companies with contactless biometrics devices from FingerTec. Freudenberg Vileda Jordan Ltd, with 50 employees, added more Face ID 4 complete with enclosures to the existing Face ID they have to provide more convenience to the growing staff count. The company has always believed in the practicality of a Face ID machine, and with Covid in the picture, they take it to another level and add an enclosure to make sure that no one can touch the machine. By adding more units to the mix, employees are distributed better, improving the entry flow significantly.
On the other hand, Siniora Food Industries, an operation with 500 employees, choose Face ID 5 FTD that comes complete with a temperature sensor as their attendance and access device for their premises. The system verifies identities and records all body temperature data instantly and does not give access if anybody has a feverish temperature, securing the premises right from the start.
These precautions are crucial to reduce the chance of getting shut down if a positive case is identified inside the premises, which can be very costly if it happens frequently.
The pandemic has introduced the new normal, and FingerTec is ready to assist in that transformation, providing appropriate devices for companies to stay safe going forward.
For companies in Jordan that require contactless biometrics devices, contact Euro Jordan at +962 5520012 or sales@eurojo.com for a great offer. For those from other countries, contact us at info@fingertec.com for agents in your country.
